Pendragon, aka Pendragon II, is a semi-famous sail boat that has competed in many races. It was designed by New Zealander Laurie Davidson and built in San Diego CA in 1980 with custom modifications. Its most recent captain requested shirts to be made for the 2024 race to Hawaii. Based on reference photos and previous line drawings, the logo was redrawn, the name typeface identified and the boat was traced into a new line drawing. The client wanted the graphics to be a bright red to match the striking hull on a white shirt.

Logo Recreation

I was able to find and identify the typeface, Binner, through online research. Without success, I first attempted to search “stripes font art deco”. I uploaded an image (top left) of the boat name to a font identifier. I was able to typeset many fonts before selecting the closest match. For the dragon, I simply used the pen tool and traced over the image.

Line Drawing Progress

Older line drawings of this boat existed online so I used those as a base. However, since this boat in particular has had so many modifications, it was important to reference more recent photographs.

Reference Photos

The boat name photo was provided at an angle. The image was straightened out to be traceable.
