Ultimately this was produced in two parts: the marble background with title copy at the top, and strips per row of products. Associates in store would install the graphic by removing everything from the slat wall, affixing the large 22x55 graphic to the fixture, then slicing into the slats to place the hooks. Once the product was placed, 22x2 info strips would be applied. This process ensured stores would not cut into the copy wall on the graphic as some slat walls had different spacing.

2017 Williams Sonoma. I traveled to New York City 2017 Williams Sonoma. I traveled to New York City and found myself excited to see things I worked on all the across the country on the East coast! I was less excited to see misprints. It turns out our vendor was not sending us scaled proofs. Most files are built as 12.6x16.8 and scaled up to 18x24 or down to 9x12. Occasionally files would be built as “actual” sizes, but this wasn’t typical.

Per the photos, scaled 9x12 and scaled 18x24 graphics have issues with the copy and the rule placements, showing extra or less spacing. The issue is due to inset text box dimension not scaling appropriately with the copy. I had made the change to auto-size the text boxes and push content down or up to streamline production but hadn’t tested scalability.

The rubric and hedline with a rule are in one text box with jump object text wrapping applied. The dek copy text box overlaps with the inset space above and auto-sizes when the hedline pushes into it.

We solved by scaling the 12.6 graphics, manually adjusting the text boxes and sending specs to the vendor to apply in their end when scaling.

Looking back, I wouldn’t set up copy this way again. At the time, though flawed, it was more efficient than the previous set up. I learned I needed to check more details regarding print proofs. Sometimes the best change is a rolling change when budgets are involved!
